The Closure® Procedure

Your surgeons at Capitol Vein Care have performed over 1000 VNUS Closure procedures since initiating the procedure in 2000. In addition, other physicians from around the United States and as far away as Taiwan and England have visited Capitol Vein Care to learn the current office based techniques.

The VNUS® Closure procedure, an alternative treatment option to traditional vein stripping surgery, brings state-of-the-art technology to an age old disease.

The Closure procedure is an office based procedure performed in doctor’s offices, surgical centers and hospitals. Local or general anesthesia can be used to insure comfort during the treatment. Using a single needle stick or a small incision, a thin catheter is inserted into the great saphenous vein. The catheter delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy to the vein wall, causing it to heat, collapse and seal shut.

Once the diseased vein is closed, other healthy veins take over and empty blood from your legs. As normal return flow is re-established, your symptoms should improve noticeably.

Following the procedure, the catheter is removed, a bandage is placed over the insertion site and your leg may be wrapped typically for 1 day to aid healing. Your doctor may ask you to walk, wear compression stockings, and to refrain from standing for long periods of time following the procedure to help speed your recovery. Many patients resume normal activity within 1-2 days.

Vein Closure® Post-Treatment Regimen

Activity: Return to normal activities as tolerated. Refrain from strenuous activities (lifting of heavy weights, treadmill or stairmaster) for one week. You may walk and climb stairs as much as you like.

Pain medication: Most patients do not require any pain medication. If necessary, you may take mild pain relievers for one to two days if necessary.

Bandages: Remove bandage after one day or any time the dressing feels too tight or causes numbness of the extremity. Then wear your thigh high or waist high support hose for a week during the daytime.

Follow-up: You will need a duplex scan 5-7 days after the procedure and then a follow-up visit with either Dr. McNeil or Dr. Rosenberg afterward.

It is normal to experience some tenderness and possibly bruising along the areas where local anesthesia was administered on the inside of the thigh.

Call your physician immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Shortness of breath or chest pain

  • Swelling of the treated limb

  • Fever of 100.5 degrees or higher
